3D animated cogs created by LaserSister (Kay Vincent) using Claude Design

Using Claude Design to Create Animated 3D Objects

I have just discovered Claude Design, and am seeing what it can (and can’t do). In this case I wanted to see if it could create animated 3D objects. The answer is “Yes…sort of”.

The prompt I gave was:

Can you create a simple animation of a 3D object, that I can then use as a video on my website? E.g. two cogs working together. The video should take up as little memory and processing time as possible.

…and the video below shows Claude’s first attempt. Not bad, except that (1) the teeth don’t mesh together, and so the cogs could never actually work, and (2) one of the cogs is placed behind the other, and so again they wouldn’t work:

Having said that, though, I am quite impressed that it was able to:

  1. come up with a 3D animation in the first place, based on just the text of my prompt.
  2. work out the gear ratios between the two cogs correctly.
  3. Create an mp4 that I could immediately download.
  4. Ensure that the video was a seamless animation with no jumps in it.

So, as usual, the AI is about 80% of the way toward creating what I actually wanted. In this case, I highly doubt that it would be worth trying to pursue this project any further at the moment to try to improve the video. I am pretty sure that at this stage of Claude Design’s development, I would be spending an awful lot of time trying to get a perfect product, when there are already other better ways to do this. But it was still a very exciting and useful experiment, and I’m really looking forward to future developments of Claude Design.

Have you experimented with Claude Design yet? How did it go? Let me know in the comments section.
