3D Scanning Experiment: Yellow Teddy Bear

This week I’ve been experimenting with 3D scanning! I discovered my local MakerLab at the beginning of 2026, and since then I’ve been learning to use lots of new kit. This week I thought I’d try something a bit… unusual.

Meet Teddy. My 50-something yellow and white teddy bear.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure he would be a suitable item to scan, what with his literally threadbare surface. But we managed it. Giant thanks to technician Emily at the MakerLab for helping me. This is Teddy being scanned by the handheld scanner (which I think it was similar to this model).

This is the result. A digital version of Teddy:

I obviously immediately thought it would make a brilliant pair of earrings. So Emily helped me to print Teddy on the 3D resin printer (I think it’s a Formlabs machine).

I painted them with acrylic paint:

And now I’ve got the only set of Kay’s-50-year-old-yellow-teddy-jewellery in the entire world.

…which my husband says are hideous, and if I ever wear them then he’s not going anywhere with me.

But what he doesn’t know is that I haven’t finished my experiment yet, and there are plenty more things in the pipeline that involve my teddy, now that I’ve got its digital measurements 😉

What would you do with a 3D scan of your teddy bear?
